I’ve had a lot of stress dreams about my grandmother lately. She was recently diagnosed with cancer. They caught it early enough that it should be treatable with chemo.

In the first dream she sent me a text telling me her cancer had become terminal. I didn’t even remember that dream until half-way through my first class.

The other dream I don’t remember as clearly, but it had something to do with supporting my Pop-pop and whatnot.

I really hope these dreams stop. She’s been responding fairly well to chemo so far. I am grateful for that.

I couldn’t even manage a good bye for this call. I just pressed end, and with that all my strength seeped into the floor and dragged me down. Next to me on the floor my phone vibrated, but I couldn’t muster the energy to answer.

It’s never a the call you expect.

Your sister committed suicide this morning.

I knew my mom needed me, and that’s why she was calling me back. If she could in some way provide any solace for me, it would help her. But I just couldn’t.

The vibrations next to me stopped, and that’s when I realized I was shaking, and that my cheeks were covered in hot tears. It’s funny how sometimes you don’t even know how you are reacting to news like this. It just happens; its a reflex.

Sometimes you do a writing exercise to help yourself distance from the possibility of something like this ever happening, which is honestly a pretty real possibility for me.

Then you realize you are cheapening her feelings, focusing only on how her actions make you feel. Not how lost and broken and desperate she is.

Then you realize just how selfish you really are, no matter how much other people might tell you that you’re not.

And I love the fact that she isn’t portrayed as delicate or soft. Indigo is associated with royalty and nobility but also with austere strength. The way she’s posed and interacting with the camera—no demurely averted gaze ala Jackie O. She’s staring at the photographer, staring them down.

Not adversarial, but assertive

After 1939 a new village of Belchite was built adjacent to the ruins of the old, which remain a ghost town as a memorial to the war.
